When you use terms like “wife” and “husband” you ARE forcing them into gender roles. I’m sorry if you can’t see that. Even if YOU think they are joking around, YOU are forcing them into YOUR idea of homonormitivity with heterosexist language.
In addition, it forces this idea of homonormativity onto anyone who sees that confession. It forces young queer people to believe that to be like media representations, they are forced to be either the “wife” or “husband”. Your interpretation of them is oppressive.
If you can’t see how offensive it is, even as a joke, then I’m not sure what to tell you. Even jokes or joking around media representations like this enforce gender roles for gay men and women and uphold heterosexist principles.
I’m not the one oppressing people through microaggressions like this confession, thank you very much. You are. If you can’t see how wrong it is, what you are doing, I have no idea what to say. I can’t make you realize this if you refuse to see it.
You ARE being offensive. Guess what, I’m a queer person and your use of those terms applied to gay men has offended me. And considering I see other queer people liking my post, you’ve offended them as well.
Educate yourself on forms of oppression, oppressive language, and heterosexism before you leave things like this in my ask please. It is not my job to educate you. Google is your friend.
