TV’s Great Women Part II: Anti-Heroes, Pure Hearts, And Cordelia Chase by Ryan McGee

What’s most striking about Cordelia, and something that should be applied more broadly when trying to conceive more television characters based on her, is her constant and consistent ability to consciously choose to do more with her life. At nearly every point, she has the opportunity (and often the inclination) to run away. But she doesn’t. She’s a character for whom it would be easy to shut her eyes to the more horrible aspects of life. Instead, she faces them head-on. Getting Doyle’s visions wasn’t something she planned, but turned into something she used to help Angel Investigations. Getting a momentary glimpse into the pain of humanity at once should have driven her mad. Instead, it drives her to help more people. She had an opportunity in Pylea to pass on her visions to the Groosalugg, but chose to maintain control over them. When the visions became too much to bear, she agreed to become half-demon to shoulder the load.

FIERCE FEMALE OF THE MONTH: DECEMBER
CHARISMA CARPENTER

I’m going to share a bit of a personal story here. It’s no secret to people who follow me that I have family that works in the industry and I had a few jobs here and there on various projects. As such, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a lot of crew who worked on Buffy, Angel, and Veronica Mars.
All of them, without hesitation, have told me what an amazing person Charisma Carpenter is, how genuine and sweet she is, how she has a wicked sense of humor but she has a huge heart. I have never seen a woman so defended by crew before. And let me tell you, crew are the first to bad mouth a person. Everyone I know who has worked with her has spoken about how amazing she and defends her like a pit bull with a bone.
In a town like Hollywood, that speaks volumes. If you need any proof, just look at her Twitter. All her charities, all the love she gives her “frans”, and the fact that she doesn’t charge for autographs at cons. She is just incredible to me.
