By Me, Beside Me, To Guide Me
A Donna Summer PrimerDonna Summer (born LaDonna Gaines), who died today at age 63 after a lengthy battle with cancer, was hailed the world over as The Queen of Disco. She was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the Billboard chart, and she won five Grammy awards over the course of her decades-long career. Her collaborations with producer Giorgio Moroder — including the iconic “Love To Love You Baby”, which she conceived herself — helped to cement the disco sound, and shaped a generation of popular music. Summer’s early work was controversial and often censored due to its frank (for the time) sexual suggestiveness, but no moral panic could prevent her ascent to the top of the charts. In the 80s, as disco died down, she transitioned effortlessly into other genres and had a string of major pop hits.
Summer was especially beloved in the gay community, and was sure to make it clear that she loved her gay fans — even suing New York magazine for libel (and netting a settlement) when it printed allegations that she was homophobic during the AIDS crisis. I for one will be having a fruity, fruity drink in her honor tonight. We’ll miss you, Donna! We’ll never have that recipe again.

FIERCE FEMALE OF THE MONTH: MAY
DONNA SUMMER

I know May is half over but I was having a hell of a time deciding who to choose for this month. And then the news came this morning that Donna Summer had passed away. My heart is broken. This wonderful, talented, compassionate woman deserves some recognition and love. She truly was a good soul and the world is less now that she is gone

YOU
No seriously. If you’re a female or a woman or identify as a woman or just think of yourself as a fierce feminine spirit, you’re my pick for this month. We all need everyday heroes and to me, you’re all my everyday heroes. I see more battles for equality on my dash than I do in the real world sometimes. I see more people standing up for what they believe in and calling people out on their shit than anywhere else. It’s amazing to me.
Everyone here has always been so kind and supportive, even when we disagree. You’re like this huge family to me. All I want to do is meet you all, hug you, and tell you how wonderful you are. So this is my way of doing it, in a small way.
I love you all and thank you.
(And sorry this is so late!)
